The article studies the live weight and exterior indicators of sheep of the Kazakh short-tailed wool sheep breed of meat-fatty direction. The objects of the study were the heifers and rams of the "Nur" farm and the "Elkentai" agricultural production cooperative in the Abay region. During the study, the live weight of the animals was determined using electronic scales, and eight main body dimensions (height of the withers and withers, depth and width of the chest, width of the hips, chest girth, tibia girth, oblique length of the body) were measured. The obtained data were processed by the method of variational statistics. As a result, it was found that the live weight indicators of the studied sheep correspond to the breed standard and that they are relatively long-legged, compact-bodied, and strong-bodied animals. No significant exterior differences were observed between the sheep of the desired type in the two farms. The results of the study indicate the importance of live weight and body dimensions in the selection and breeding of sheep of the meat-fatty direction. The results of the study can serve as a basis for effective assessment of the characteristics of sheep useful for farming. These results will allow for the development of scientific research aimed at further improving sheep breeds and increasing their productivity.
